INDIVIDUALS.: READY. SET.
By 2020, there will be 55 million job openings in the United States, and most of those will require post-secondary education. We need to make sure the country is ready with enough knowledge workers prepared for careers in a global economy. We also need to attract talented faculty to Wright State who can prepare and inspire our students. Investing in students and faculty is an investment in the economic development and quality of life in our region, state, and nation.
Wright State is known for opening doors to a diverse range of students: those who are the first in their families to attend college, returning adult learners, traditionally aged students, international students, military veterans, as well as those who have disabilities. Through the campaign, we want to significantly increase scholarship funds to help these hard-working students who have the potential to succeed to earn a college degree.
Endowed professorships, those that carry a donor’s name, are the hallmark of a mature university—fitting as Wright State University approaches its 50th anniversary. Through the campaign, we hope to establish endowed professorships at each of the university’s schools and colleges. Endowed professorships are a key recruiting advantage: they are sought after because of the prestige they bring to faculty members, often accompanied by additional funds to promote research. The ultimate beneficiaries of endowed professorships are, of course, students who will learn from these thought leaders.
Wright State is known for innovation. Our Wright State Research Institute has formed partnerships with several aerospace and defense companies and with the Air Force Research Laboratory at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. These partnerships bring outstanding research and internship opportunities to Wright State for our students. Through the campaign, we want to support these efforts and spark more collaborative efforts to revitalize the region’s economy.
ENVIRONMENTS.: DREAM. BIG.
To fulfill the goals of the university’s strategic plan, Wright State is dreaming big with three major building projects. Support from alumni and friends, along with state and bond financing, can bring these facilities to fruition.
CREATIVE ARTS CENTER MODERNIZATION
This project will revitalize and expand the Creative Arts Center (CAC) by renovating existing classrooms, studio spaces, labs, and shared areas; constructing a new home for the Robert and Elaine Stein Galleries; and transforming the existing art gallery into studio classrooms. The benefits of this revitalized facility will reach far beyond campus. A revamped CAC will attract the best visual and performing arts students, who will be the next generation of artists, musicians, dancers, and filmmakers. The new CAC will also provide a resource that will benefit art enthusiasts throughout the Miami Valley.
NEUROSCIENCE ENGINEERING COLLABORATION BUILDING
This one-of-a-kind building will bring together engineers, neuroscientists, and physicians dedicated to finding answers to some of the most perplexing neurological health issues. The four-story, 90,000-square-foot building will feature laboratories outfitted with sophisticated equipment, office space, and work areas for 100 faculty, staff, and students. Private support can bring this project to a successful conclusion—and help speed the commercialization and clinical use of research and technologies developed there.
STUDENT SUCCESS CENTER
Wright State believes a college education should be a reality for those willing to work hard enough to achieve it. Through the campaign, we will support students by constructing a new Student Success Center (SSC). Located in the New Classroom Building, this center will bring advising, tutoring, the Mathematics Help Center, the University Writing Center, common study areas, and testing services under one roof. The SSC will serve the full range of students—from the high school valedictorian, to the older student returning to the classroom, and everyone in between.
INNOVATIONS.: EXPECT. MORE.
A Wright State University education includes all of the expected elements of the college experience: students and faculty, classrooms and lectures, laboratories and textbooks. But that’s not all—not by a long shot. So much learning at Wright State happens outside of the classroom while experiencing student activities, outside speakers, volunteer opportunities, and internships, to name just a few. This campaign priority would provide the funds that can help fuel all of these enriching experiences.
Wright State believes in applied research—that which both solves problems and creates jobs. The College of Engineering & Computer Science has formed public-private partnerships that are mutually beneficial for students, faculty, and corporations. We are looking to expand these relationships to include even more state and federal agencies as well as companies. A number of other colleges aspire to create interdisciplinary centers, envisioned as hubs that would help prepare students for careers—bringing together resources from experiential learning to internships to job interviews.
SERVING THE COMMUNITY
Wright State University regularly garners national recognition for our commitment to community service. For the past four years, for example, Wright State has been named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with Distinction by the Corporation for National and Community Service. The Honor Roll recognizes colleges and universities that reflect the value of exemplary community service and achieve meaningful outcomes in their communities. This service mission extends to each of the university’s schools and colleges, such as the Boonshoft School of Medicine, which was the first in the Midwest to receive the Association of American Medical Colleges Outstanding Community Service Award.
Imagination abounds across Wright State University. Each year, student academic teams excel in national and regional competitions. Faculty uncover promising opportunities to advance research and student learning. Campaign investment could strengthen these developments, providing funds necessary to advance and capitalize on all of these innovations.
